UI/Graphics/HTML/CSS Developer
Background:
The Rogers Business Development Group is developing a real estate search site (Zoocasa.com) that is currently in public beta. As a Usability/Graphics/HTML/CSS developer you will be responsible for translating requirements into wire frames, creating optimized graphics based on approved wire frames, and developing the resulting HTML/CSS code as required.
The development environment consists of Java, Hibernate, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Linux, Ruby, some proprietary software applications and 3rd party web services. In terms of development methodology we are utilizing an agile development framework (familiarity with extreme programming or agile development is extremely beneficial).
The Business Development group is responsible for incubating new businesses (start-ups) as such the ideal candidate should be:
• Personally motivated to deliver a best-of-breed customer experience
• Adaptable to a fast paced environment where scope and priorities change frequently
• Able to call upon a personal network of friends/colleagues for subject matter expertise
Key Responsibilities:
• Architect and develop detailed technical specifications in response to business requirements
• Generate creative solutions to functional, performance, and technical problems
• Rapid prototyping and testing of concepts and ideas
• Create detailed wire frames based on loosely defined concepts
• Create and cut .png, .gif, .jpg images to support approved wire frames
• Develop HTML, CSS code
• Contribute to the development of a web based application with the following functionality:
o Spidering and structuring of data
o Geographically based mapping
o Integration, presentation and analysis of multiple sources of data
o Clipping, storing and tracking of data
o Web2.0 Interface functionality
Skills:
• Detailed understanding of web systems design and implementation. Object Oriented Programming, DB Architecture and open source web technologies.
• Strong communication and writing skills
• Good knowledge of relational databases, preferably MySQL and PostgreSQL
• Familiarity of agile development techniques
• A strong willingness to self-learn new technologies within a very short time frame.
• Development on open source platforms.
• Google Maps API experience.
• Ruby on Rails, Postgres, PostGIS, AJAX, JavaScript, Scriptaculous, and Prototype framework would all be assets.
Experience:
• 3+ years of web designing, architecting and development.
• Training or experience in graphic design and usability for the web
• Applications development in a fast paced, demanding start-up environment
• Exposure to projects that mash-up or integrate a variety of 3rd party applications
• Developing web-based consumer facing media properties or applications key.
• Developing applications that mash-up or integrate a variety of third party applications
• Strong interest and understanding of web based technology and application trends.
